Even if your welding very close to the plate (can't be on it, or you'll be welding *to* it) or flip the weldment with a big fat fresh bead right on the plate, steel transfers heat too fast and the plate has too much radiant surface to get all that hot… Certainly not enough to create a localized heat saturated spot that will be hot enough to combust wood, especially if you use real wood, but I never had a problem even with pressed wood. There is just not that much heat transfer from the weldment to what it's sitting on.

I never even so much as made a dark place in the wood, and that's with some fairly heavy welding. For a while, back before I built my welding table, I used a heavy piece of particle board on saw horses with a piece of 1/4 plate (approx 2 x 2) thrown on top to isolate it from the direct heat, sparks and puddle fall out.
